MUSIC

Casimir Effect

Casimir Effect were formed in Manchester during November 2010. South Korean-born singer Daniel Choi came to England just a few years ago with the single-minded aim of becoming a rockstar – with some supremely dextrous vocals and an effervescent stage presence, he may well just make that mark. He’s at the front of a five piece that includes Fez and Philip on guitar, Stephanie on bass and Andy on drums – it’s dense, swirling and clever indie rock pop that captures the imagination straight away. Casimir Effect joined us for our first Butter Bridge event in July this year and blew everyone away (not least with their outstanding cover of House of the Rising Sun) – this November they will be playing as a full band with us, and have promised something ‘special’ to make this gig for Butter Bridge stand out…

DJembeKan

One of the most unique and spectacular of Manchester’s live acts, DJembeKan will form a special and integral part of this month’s Butter Bridge. You may well have caught them before if you’re a regular at the Antwerp Mansion, where they often reside. They have their roots in traditional African drumming, but fuse this with western electronic influences including D&B and breakbeat. The result is designed to get people up on their feet and moving – djembe master Sidiki Dembele and his team of artists from five countries (Bamba, Javier, Pablo, Judson, Daryl and Baba Gale) have never yet failed. It’s with great pleasure that we welcome DJembeKan into the fold, and we’re sure it will be your pleasure too.

COMEDY

Barry Fox

We’re offering all sorts on this trip across hyperspace with Butter Bridge, and Barry Fox certainly is all sorts. Plucked from the banks of the Tyne, Barry is a comedian and artist much to say and little to prove. Fresh from venturing into the Edinburgh Fringe with his show Poems, Pamphlets, Props and Pissing About, Barry will be very much in keeping with the Butter Bridge traditions of absurdism and cardboard.

Katy O’Brien

One half of the acclaimed London comedy duo Bareback Banshees, who have been described as ‘random comedy and wildly eccentric – wrong in the mind, in a good way’ by Paul Foot. An accomplished character stand-up in her own right, Katy O’Brien will be entertaining those who join us where angels fear to tread.
