The World Cup

The qualifying is done as is the draw. Now the 2010 World Cup is just a matter of days away. Once it starts it will captivate the whole world. Four weeks later we should be left with a champion. Its quite a hectic couple of weeks, as the players are expected to squeeze a few more fixtures more than their usual work load. Added to this is the climate change that some players may find a bit draining. Having said this, on the worlds great stage most wont allow these trivial issues dampen their craving to achieve the ultimate.
Here at 4Q we like a hard fought game of football, me especially. For me the world cup takes me back to some of my fondest memories at University. I remember back in 2006 sitting in our back garden, TV, BBQ and beer in hand watching the controversy unfold. Although we didn’t get the result we’d hoped for it made me come to realize that the world cup is much more than football. Its a period when we all come together, all beefs cast aside to share the moment. For these four weeks work takes a back seat for once, each day no matter how bad the weather will be exciting and I promise to keep my patience every time my dear mother asks who the team in white are. Well maybe.
One of the best parts of the World Cup is picking a neutral side which you hope will go a long way, generally a team which has less chance than a lettuce. I find myself praying that England don’t have to play them as it feels for me like taking old yeller out back with the 12 gauge, and I really don’t want to take pleasure in watching my back up team get steam rolled.
So who should be look out for?
Brazil
The five time winners are joint favourites, with Spain, to win the 19th World Cup. Brazil are in great form, qualifying convincingly at the top of the South American group, and tasting victory in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. They are one of the strongest teams and will be confident of claiming their sixth World Cup championship.
Spain
The European Cup holders have recently been backed by Pele to claim their first championship. Following a flawless qualifying campaign, winning ten out of ten, Spain are the current number one team in the FIFA rankings, and will be the team to beat in South Africa.
England
England finished top of a difficult qualifying group containing Ukraine and Croatia. Although, currently only ninth in the FIFA rankings, the odds reflect English optimism and hope that they can repeat their feat back in 1966 and win a second World Cup.
Wild Card – Uruguay
Not well known for footballing abilities but with a name like that I cant not get behind them. See what I did there with the whole Uruguay and get behind them pun? Forget it.
The World Cup summed up in a brief but heart felt segment. I’ve got all four weeks planned to the finest detail, starting with USA at Parklife Festival. Live music, live football good vibes.
